(krist'mas.) [From Christ and ma .] (Chron.) The festival of the birth of Christ, annually commemorated on the 25th Dec., which is called Christmas-day. Christmas Island, in the Pacific Ocean; Lat. 0° at its N. extremity, Lon. 157° 30′ W. Discovered by Capt. Cook in 1777. Christmas Sound, an inlet of the sea at the S. point of S. America, 120 m. N.W. of Cape Horn, discovered by Capt. Cook in 1774. [s. 185]
