(¢m’bol-izm) [L. embolis’mus, from Gr. & in + βάλλειν to throw), — The plugging of an artery or vein by a clot or obstruction which has been brought to its place by the blood-current. air-e., embolism by bubbles of air. bacillary @., obstruction of a ve el by an aggregation of bacilli. bland e., embolism in which the plug is composed of non-septic material. capillary 6., blocking of the capillaries with bacteria. cro ed e., embolism in which the embolus pa es through an open foramen ovale or an unclosed duct us arter.osus. direct e., embolism occurring in the direction of the blood-stream. fat-e., embolism of fat that has entered the circulation. hematogenous e., embolism in a blood ve el. infective 6., embolism in which the embolus is infective. lymph-e., lymphogenous e., embolism of a lymph-ve el. miliary @., that which affects at the same time many small blood-ve els. multiple e., embolism by a number of small emboli. oil-e.
