WILDERNESS, THE

a region in Spottsylvania Co., 16 miles west of Fred ericks burg, where in May, 1864 there took place a series of the flercest battles of the Civil War, between the Federal Army under General Grant and the Confederates under General Lee. After a terrific struggle on both sides, in which large lo es were suffered, the victory was claimed by each. General Lee, however, retreated and was followed by General Grant. The Federal lo es amounted to about 18,000 and that of the Confederates to about 11,000. (1844), an American chemist, born in Kent, Indiana and graduated from Hanover College, Indiana in 1867. Has been a profe or at various colleges and since 1899 profe or of agricultural chemistry at George Washington University.
