Brooch

(See Fibula.) Anglo-Saxon and Irish specimens of magnificent workmanship are described in the Archæological Album. In the Middle Ages brooches bore quaint inscriptions: Chaucer’s “priore ” wore “ a broche of gold ful shene, On which was first y-wretten a crouned A, And after, Amor vincit omnia .” Leather brooches for hats are mentioned by Dekker in Sat i rom as tix , 1602.
