[Prefix pleuro-, and Gr. Zool.: The typical genus of the Pleuronemidae. There are three freshwater species and one marine. pleû-rô-nê-mi-dæ, s. pl . [Modern Latin pleu ronem(a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idæ .] Zool.: A family of holotrichous Ciliata. Free swimming animalcules, ciliate throughout; oval aperture supplemented by an extensile and retractile hood-shaped velum. Genera: Pleuronema, Cyclidium, Uronema, and Beonidium.
