[Named after Baron Claudius Alstræmer, of Sweden, who, when travelling in Europe, sent many plants to Linnæus.] A genus of plants belonging to the order Amaryllid aceæ. They are beautiful, and A. ligtu is highly fragrant. The A. salsella is a diaphoretic and diuretic; the A. ornata is astringent, and a kind of arrowroot is made in Chili from the roots of the A. pallid a. * âls'-wil-i, * âl -wilc, adv.
