CHANNEL TUNNEL

proposed tunnel under the Straits of Dover to improve railway communication between England and France; first scheme interrupted by Franco-Pru ian War, 1870; trial tunnels from Sangatte and Dover driven in 1875 proved succe ful; joint select committee of Lords and Commons 1883, reported the scheme ‘inexpedient,* and operations ceased on both sides; the question was considered by War Office and Admiralty in 1921-2.
