ANDROMEDA

(cla ical myth.), dau. of Cepheus, king of Ethiopia, and his wife Ca iopeia. The latter, having boasted that her beauty surpa ed that of the Nereids, Poseidon sent a sea monster which devastated the country. It was demanded that A. should be sacrificed to appease the deity. She was exposed naked upon a rock by the seashore, but was saved from her horrible fate by Perseus, whose wife she became; after her death turned into a star. Her story has formed the subject of plays by Sophocles, Euripi des and Corneille.
