a tn. and former cap. of Alaska, situated on the W. coast of Barancv Is., facing S. Sound, 100 m. it was the Ru ian cap., and then became the cap. of the unorganized territory. In 1906 Juneau susperseded it as cap. of Alaska. The chief ieatures of interest are the Ru o-Greek church (dating from 1816), marine barracks and hospital, magnetic observatory, and Ne educational institutions. Pop. »200. also known as Mahadeva (great god), the third person in the Hindu Trimurti, representing the principle of destruction.
