sterlet

[Ger., from Ru . sterliad.] Ichthy.: Acipenser ruthenus , from the Danube and Ru ian rivers flowing into the Black Sea. It is a small species, rarely exceeding three feet in length, but is highly prized as a food-fish. It has a narrow, elongated, pointed snout, barbels slightly fringed, skin of upper surface dark gray, dorsal shields and belly whitish. The sterlet is a regular article of food in Vienna, and sometimes ascends the Danube as far as Ulm.
