pl. [Gr. desmos a chain, a bond, and bryon =a kind of mo y sea-weed.] Bot.: A name applied to ferns in which the fronds are produced terminally. děş-mō-di-ŭm, s. [Gr. desmos, desmē =a bundle, and eidos =form, appearance.] Bot .: A genus of papilionaceous plants, sub-tribe Hedysarce. The leaves have generally three leaflets; more rarely they are simple. The flowers are in racemes or panicles; the legumes jointed, each cefly from south America or from India. Desmo dium gyrans, an Indian species, is the Moving-plant, so called from the rotatory movement of the leaflets. It is sometimes cultivated in greenhouses. D. diffu sum is a fodder-plant. joint one-seeded. About 100 species are known, děş-mō-di-ŭs, s. [DESMODIUM.] Zool .: A genus of Bats, including the true Vampires (q. v.).
