DOUGLAS WILLIAM, (jer'röld,) an English dramatist,journalist, and miscellaneous writer, B. in London, 1803; D. 1857. Jersey, (jur'ze,) the largest of the Channel Islands group, lying off the N.W. coast of France, and a dependency of England. Length, abt. 12 m.; breadth, 7. It has an undulating surface, with a tolerably fertile soil, growing large quantities of fruits and vegetables. Its breed of milch cattle is noted; C.St. Helier's. Pop. 56,227. Jer's ey, in Illinois, a S.W. co., b. on Mi ouri; area, 350 sq. m.; C. Jerseyville. Pop. 15,054. Jersey City, in New Jersey, C. of Hudson co., on the W. bank of the Hudson River, and opposite to the city of New York, is a considerable and prosperous town a suburb, in fact, of New York - and the entrepôt of an extensive railroad and canal system, and of several lines of ocean steamships.
