(x) Edouard Victor Antoine, Lille, Jan. 27, 1823—Paris, Apr. 22, 1892; eminent French composer; studied at Paris Cons., winning the 2nd Prix de Rome in 1847; little known until 1872 when his orchestral works began to appear, and 1874 when _ Sarasate played his vIn. concerto. C. (operas) “Te Roi d’ Ys,” “Savonarola” and “La. Jacquerie’ (latter 2 fragmentary, last completed by Coquard, 1895); 3. symphonies and many shorter orchestral works, a string quartet, piano trios, sonatas for vIn. and for ’cello, vin. concertos; ‘“Symphonie Espagnole,” for vin. and orch.; choral church music and many songs. The popularity of his works, particularly the vln. concertos and the “Symphonie Espagnole,” is owing to their genial melodic qualities. After early neglect he established his place the more gifted French comps. of his time. ‘Le Roi d’ Ys” has held the stage in France. m. the contralto, Mlle. Bernier de Maligny.
