(sut.) (A. S.] (Chem.) That portion of fuel which escapes combustion, and which is mechanically carried up by the current of hot air, either to be deposited on the sides of the chimney, or to be discharged into the atmosphere. The soot of coal and that of wood in all probability differ materially, the former containing more carbonaceous matter and more ammoniacal salts than the latter. Both kinds are used as manure.
