GARNET

A mineral of which there are several varieties. The precious garnet is transparent, red, and in crystals or rounded grains; it is a silicate of alumina and iron, and is used for ornamental jewellery. Common farnet is often found in large crystals and ma es, transucent, and of various colours. [s. 498]
