In Geography and Navigation, the direction or point of the compa in which an object is seen; thus an object bears north, south, . when seen in these directions. When the distance of an object or point of land is specified besides the bearing, -the place of the ship with respect to such object is obviously fixed; thus, the Land's End N. 48°, E. 141 miles, determines the ship to be 141 miles in the S. 4S° W. direction, or nearly south-west from the Land's End.
