Lord (Gerald Tyrwhitt), b. Bridgnorth, Engl., Sept. 18, 18833 composer; studied in Dresden and London; chiefly self-taught in music, but orchestration with Stravinsky, some of whose modern musical devices are reflected in his work; entered diplomatic service, 1909; after 1912 connected with British Emba y in Rome; succeeded to British peerage, 1918; c. (opera in one act) “‘Le Carro e de Saint-Sacrement’’; (orchestra) ‘‘Fantaisie Espagnole” (1919); ‘“‘Funeral Marches for a Statesman, a Canary, and a Rich Aunt” (for two pianos); ‘‘ Valse Bourgeoise’”’ (Salzburg Festival, 1923); Fugue for Orchestra (danced by Diaghileff Ballet, London, 1925); also an amusing nautical ballet, ‘The Triumph of Neptune,’ suggested by Row lands on prints, from which a succ. orch. suite has been drawn.
