Harris, Isham

GREEN, statesman, was born in Tullahoma, Tenn., Feb. 10, 1818; began mercantile life as a shop boy in 1832, but later studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1841; was elected to the Tenne ee legislature as a Democrat in 1847; member of Congre (1849-53); in the latter year removed to Memphis, where he thereafter resided. Was governor of Tenne ee (1857-63) and during the last three years of the Civil War did staff duty in the Confederate army. In 1867 he returned to the practice of law in Memphis; was elected U. S. Senator in 1877, and re-elected in 1883, 1889, and 1895; was unanimously selected for president pro tem. of the Senate in 1893. Died July 8, 1897.
