PIERCE, b. 1830. M. C. from Me. 1871-81; U. S. Senator since 1881. Fryxell, ANDERS, 1795-1881. Swedish historian and poet. Parts of his Tales from Swedish History , 18 vols., 1832-52, were tr. into English, German, French and Dutch. His book defending the aristocracy, 4 vols., 1845-50, caused much controversy. He wrote an opera, The La of Varmland .
