ARMAMENT

(Lat. Arm amentum.) A force equipped for war, naval or military. In Roman antiquities, armameuta comprehended the rigging and tackling of a ship, its sails, sail yards, oars, ropes, <fcc. Hence " Anna" denotes the sails (Virg. JEn. v. 1. 55.) and the rudder (ib. vi. 1. 363.) of a ve el. [s. 102]
