lan'tern, n. A portable or fixed transparent case inclosing a light, and protecting it from wind, rain, etc.; upper part of a lighthouse. {Arch.) little dome over the roof of a building to give light; an open tower. {Mach.) A trundle wheel. — Dark lantern. A lantern with a single opening, which may be closed to conceal the light.
