b. 1829. American actor, trained for the stage in childhood, and famous since 1865 in the part of Rip Van Winkle. His autobiography, 1890, is one of the best of theatrical memoirs. Jefferson, Thomas, LL.D., 1743-1826. Third Pres. of the U. S., and leader of the original Republicans as opposed to the Federalists; Delegate to Congre 1775-76; author of the origi Thomas Jefferson were marked with the democratic simplicity and disregard of ceremony which accorded with his convictions.
