(gwah'ah-keel,) a city and fortified seaport of S. America, in Ecuador, C. of a dept. of same name, at the head of the Bay of Guayaquil; S. Lat. 2° 20′ 28″, W. Lon. 79° 43′. The harbor is one of the best on the Pacific coast, and it is the principal commercial emporium of the republic. Pop. 22,000. [s. 428]
