An alkaloid contained in Peganum harmala , a plant growing in the Crimea. The seed coating contains Harmaline and Harmine. They are extracted by dilute sulphuric acid, and then precipitated by a solution of NaCl, in the form of chlorides; the alkaloids may be separated by adding ammonia, the harmine being first precipitated. Harmaline can be converted into harmine by the action of oxidizing agents. Harmaline forms yellow bitter salts.
