Newton, Sir Isaac

— Born 1642, died 1727. An English mathematician and physicist, famous for his discovery of the universal law of gravitation. He also discovered the binomial theorem, differential and integral calculus, and first computed the area of the hyperbola. He invented a reflecting telescope in 1668. He completed his famous work “Principia” in 1687, embodying his views upon the attraction of gravitation. After this he took active part in public affairs, receiving many distinctions and honors, and at his death was buried in Westminster Abbey.
