of emphysema. [Rare.] emphysema (em-fi-se'mä), n. The English form [NL., φύσημα, an inflation (of the stomach, peritoneum, etc.), Lloyd. 2. In bot . , bladdery; resembling a bladder. emphyteusis (em-fi-tu's is), n. [LL. (in Roman civil law), ἐμφύτευσις (only in Roman use), lit. an implanting, ἐμφυτεύειν , implant, ingraft, ult. E. imp , q. v.), ἐμφύειν , implant, pa . grow in, ἐν , in, + φύειν , produce, pa . grow.] In Rom . law , a contract by which houses or lands were given forever or for a long term on condition of their being improved and a stipu- lated annual rent paid to the grantor. It was usually for a perpetual term, thus correspond- ing to the feudal fee. In winter it [the sea] is warmer, in summer it is cooler, than the ambient air, and the difference is emphasized the farther we get away from the shore. Pop. Sci . Mo., XXVI. 535.
