ASTORIA

a city of Oregon, in Clatsop co., of which it is the county seat. It is on the Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroad, and on the Columbia River, about 100 miles northwest of Portland. It has a large commerce and is connected with foreign and domestic ports by steamship lines. There is an excellent harbor and water front. Astoria is the center of an important salmon canning industry and also has iron works, lumber mills, and other industrial establishments. It has a custom house, post office, parks, library, and other important public buildings. A fort was established here by Lewis and Clarke, and later it was the site of a fur trading station built by John Jacob Astorin 1811. It was the first settlement in the valley of the Columbia River.
