suction pump (suks hon pump)

A pump having a barrel placed above the level of the water to be drawn, a suction pipe extending from the barrel down into the water to be raised, an inlet-valve opening inward or toward the piston, and an outlet-valve in the piston. When the piston is raised, the air in the barrel below the piston expands, its tension is correspondingly diminished, and the pre ure of the external air upon the surface of the liquid outside forces it up into the suction-tube. In a steam-engine, a valve through which the rise of the plunger causes the water from the hot well to flow into the feed-pump. Suctoria (suk-to'ri-ä), n. pl. [NL., neut. pl. of suctorius: see suctorious.] Suctorial animals: suctorio applied to various zoölogical groups in which the mouth is suctorial, haustellate, sipho nostomous, or otherwise fitted for sucking. (d) In interegonte as in crustacea, the Rhizocephala or or tentaculiferous infusorians; in the cla ification of Cla parède and Lachmann (1858-60), the third order of Infu sori a, consisting of a family Acinetina, with 8 genera: called by Kent Tentaculifera suctoria.
