Niagara

River connecting lakes Erie and Ontario, and serving as a boundary between N. Y. and Canada. Niagara in a mile above the fall is 50 ft. The gorge below is ab. 7 m. long and from 800 to 1,500 ft. wide. The fall recedes on the N. Y. side ab. 6 in. annually, on the Canadian side from 3 to 5 ft. The volume of water pa ing each second is 280,000 cu. ft. An extensive water-power has been constructed on the American side (see NIAGARA TUNNEL). The 10 turbines provided for will supply 50,000 horse-power, which is converted into electricity. The total power of the falls is estimated at 4,000,000 horse-power, or an equivalent to all the steam and water-power used in the U. S.
