mangos tin

[English mangost (ana); -in ( Chem.).] Chem.: C20H22O5. A golden yellow crystalline body contained in the husk of the fruit of Garcinia mangostan a. The dried husks are boiled in water to remove the tannin, and then treated with hot alcohol. On evaporating the alcoholic solution, mangos tin is deposited as a yellow crystalline substance, destitute of taste and smell. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol and ether, forming neutral solutions. It melts at 190°, without lo of water, to a dark-colored liquid, which solidifies on cooling to an amorphous ma . It reduces gold and silver from their solutions, but is not precipitated by any metallic salt, excepting basic acetate of lead. The precipitate thrown down by the lead salt appears to have the formula 4C20H22O55Pb2O.
