GREAT

The name by which the chief of the empire so called, founded in Hindu stan by Babcr in the 15th century, was known in Europe. The last person to whom this title of right belonged was Shah Allum; and the Mogul empire having terminated at his death in 180G, his vast po e ions fell chiefly Into the hands of the East India Com MOHAIR. (Gr. mohr; Fr. moire; It. moerro; Sp. mue, pany. muer.) The hair of a variety of the common goat, famous for being soft and fine as silk, and of a silvery whitene . It is not produced anywhere but in the vicinity of Angora, in Asia Minor. The exportation of this valuable and beautiful article, unle in the shape of yarn, was formerly prohibited; but it may now be exported unspun. The production, preparation, nnd sale of mohair have long engro ed the principal attention of the inhabitants of Angora; and it used to form an important article of Venetian commerce. It is manufactured into camlets and other expensive stuffs. Hitherto but little has been imported into England. [s. 775]
