1812-1870. English novelist; founder of Household Words, 1850, and All the Year Round, 1859. His first book was Sketches by Boz, 1836; most of the others came out in serial form. Pickwick, 1837, made him famous. Then came Oliver Twist, 1838; Nicholas Nickle by, 1839; Old Curiosity Shop, 1840; Barnaby Rudge, 1841; American Notes, 1842; Martin Chuzzlewit, 1843.
