Consonant

(kon'so-nant.) [Same der iv.] (Gram.) A letter so named because it requires to be sounded in connection with a vowel. Some C. have no sound without being united with a vowel, and others have a very imperfect sound: hence, some are called mutes, and others semi-vowels. [s. 221]
