Detroit

(da-trwaw,) a fine and flourishing city of Michigan, the chief place in the State, C. of Wayne co., on the N.W. bank of the river of same name, which separates the State from Canada, and connects lakes Erie and St. Clair, abt. 7 m. from the latter, and 302 W. of Buffalo. D. has a river-front of some 4 m., and commands a large share of the lakes' traffic; po e es several noble public edifices, and is the terminus of 6 great lines of railroad, 2 of which are Canadian. She has also steam-communication with all the chief ports on the great international lakes. D. was founded by the French [s. 280]
