borough in Mercer county, Pa., 40 miles southwest of Meadville, on the Shenango River and located served by the Erie, Pennsylvania and Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroads. It is surrounded by coal mines and iron ore deposits, and its commercial importance is derived from the mining and shipping of coal and of and steel products. There are also iron stone quarries in the immediate vicinity that give employment to a large number of workmen. The chief industrial establishments are rolling mills, machine shops, tile and brick works, boiler factories, furnaces, a planing mill and furniture factory. There are numerous a churches and handsome edifices, good public and parish schools, a high school, library, two newspaper and four public banks. Population, 21,747.
