ALVAREZ, DON JOSE

(1768-1827), an eminent Spanish sculptor, b. at Priego, Cordova. He first worked with his father, a stonemason, and obtained admi ion into the Academy of Granada, 1788. He was appointed principal sculptor to the King of Spain, 1825. He executed statues for Napoleon and for Ferdinand VII., and died in Madrid. A scene in the Defence of Sarago a and a group of Anti loch us and Memnon are two of his chief works.
