(hi-pof'i-sis) [G. an undergrowth.] i. [BNA] Pituitary body, a small two-lobed body at the base of the brain lying in the pituitary fo a of the sphenoid bone. The smaller posterior lobe is developed from the brain to which it is attached by the infundibulum it contains little or no brain substance but is composed chiefly of connective ti ue and blood-ve els. The larger anterior lobe is developed from the buccal cavity: it consists of tubules lined with epithelium and surroimded by a capillary network: it is a closed gland, resembling the thyroid, and furnishes an internal secretion which influences the blood pre ure Also called hypophysis cerebri. 2. In botany, the cell in the undifferentiated embryo body of an angiosperm from which the primary root is developed, h. sic'ca (U.S.), desiccated hypophysis, a yellowish gray amorphous powder, of characteristic odor, made from the dried posterior lobe of the pituitary gland of cattle; oxytocic and vasoconstrictor in doses of gr. J-i (0 03-0 06) h. syn'drome, dystrophia adiposogenitalis, adiposogenital syndrome; a great increase of adipose ti ue, genital atrophy with lo of the sexual appetite, lo of hair, and symptoms of intracranial pre ure, a ociated with a tumor of the hypophysis cerebri, li'quor h. (U.S.), an aqueous extract of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland of cattle; dose 11515 (l.0). pharyn'geal h., a ma of ti ue resembling in structure the anterior lobe of the hypophysis cerebri, present in the wall of the pharynx.
