(sel’u-lés). A carbohydrate forming the skeleton of most plant structures and of plant cells. It is a colorle , transparent solid, insoluble in water, alcohol, etc., but soluble in sulphuric acid. It is used mainly in the arts. as in making poroxylin, etc. acid c., any combination of celulose with carboxyl groups, such as pectinic acid. They are mostly gelatinous bodies.
