The soluble mucilage may be extracted by the action of acidulated water on linseed, and precipitating the mucilage from a concentrated solu tion by alcohol. It is le transparent and le brittle than gum, and is precipitated from its aqueous solution by tincture of galls. The name is also given to commercial adhesive gum made from gum arabic or dextrin. 3. [Eng. mucilaginous ; -ne .] The quality or state of being mucilaginous; slimine , viscosity. mü-çin, s. [Eng., ., muc(us); -in.] Chem.: Vegetable Casein, Mucedin. Found in wheat, and forming one of the constituents of crude gluten. It is obtained from it by digestion with alcohol of 85 per cent., and the solution evaporated to one-half, when a flocculent precipitate of mucin is formed. It is purified by solution in boiling alcohol, the mucin being precipitated on cooling the liquid. When treated with absolute alcohol, it dries up into a granular grayish-white substance. It has nearly the same percentage composition as albumen. Mucin is also a constituent of animal mucus. mu-çip-a-roŭs, a.
