SHAW, ANNA HOWARD

(18471919), American woman suffrage leader onPa. She was brought to the United States as an infant. She graduated from the Boston University of Theology in 1878 and became a local preacher of the Metho dist Episcopal Church, preaching and lectux ing in New England, but was refused ordination by that body on her sex. In 1880 she was the Protestant Methodist first woman to be so admitted by that denomination. In 1885 she pulpit to join in the woman suffrage movement in America, in which she attained leadership as presid ent of the National American Woman Suffra ge A ociation from 1904 to 1915.
