a city and port, Bristol County, Ma achusetts, United States, on an arm of Narraganset Bay, on Taunton River, 50 miles s.g.w. of Boston. It is at the head cf deepwater navigation, and the terminus of a line of steamers from New York. It contains several handsome streets, and has extensive cotton, woollen, and calico-printing factories, as well ag ironworks. Pop. (1930), 115,274.
