PL, nevi. Nevi are of two kinds: pigmented and vascular, and are anomalies of development of the skin, one showing chiefly in exce ive deposit of pigment, the other in overgrowth of vascular ti ue, n. flammens. Syn.: port urine mark, claret stain, strawberry mark. Nevi vascular is forming smooth, flat, irregular patches of a red, bluish, or purplish color, n. lipoma to des. A variety of n. marked by increase in the amount of cutaneous fat. n. papilloma to sus. A form of n. characterized by exce ive growth of the papillae of the skin. n. pig mentos us. See mole (ist def.). n. pilosus. A variety of n. in which the hair is in exce , a mole covered with hair. n. spill us. A small variety without elevation, n. vascular is. Syn.: birthmark, mother's mark, fungus vasculosum. A congenital hypoplasia of a circumscribed area of the vascular system of the skin. It is of three kinds: (i) Cavernous n. A n. of steady growth destroying the surrounding ti ues by mechanical interference. (2) Flat n. A form in which the n. consists of a superficial plexus of dilated capillaries, e. g., the port wine mark. (3) Hypertrophic n. Well-defined angiomata, made up of a network of large dilated ve els. Cavernous nevi and hypertrophic nevi are comparatively rare. n. verrucosus. A variety in which there is exce ive development of the horny layer and the n. itself is wartlike, telangiectatic n.
