coal-tar

black viscid liquid formed during the manufacture of illuminating gas from coal. It is a mixture of many hydrocarbons, and is the source of a great variety of substances, such as the aniline dyes, and a number of the so-called synthetic drugs, c.-t. rem'edies, drugs manufactured synthetically from c.-t. or its derivatives, such as acetanilide, antipyrine, etc.
