Deputy

(děp'u-te.) [Fr. député, from L. deputo 1 ut off.] In a general sense, a person appointed or elected to act for another, or sent upon some busine by a community. By a deputation is generally understood the person or persons authorized and sent to transact busine for others, either with a special commi ion and authority, or with general powers.-(Law.) One who exercises an office in another's right; and the person whom he represents is answerable for his malfeas ance or misconduct. [s. 278]
