Trochanter

(-chăn'tür.) [ From Gr. trochazo, I gallop.] (Anat.) A name given to two apophyses, situated in the upper part of the thighbone; they receive the tendons of most of the muscles of the thigh. The major proce is on the outside, and the minor on the inside of the thigh. They receive their name from being chiefly concerned in the act of running. [s. 908]
