[Pref. myo- (2), and Greek cheilos a lip (?).J Bot.: A genus of Santalacese. An infusion of Myoschilos oblong us , called by the Chilenos Senna, is purgative. my-o-sin, s . [Gr.mys (gen it. myos ) =a muscle.] Chem. The chief constituent of the muscle plasma inclosed in the sarcolemma tubes of muscular fiber. In the living muscle it exists in the liquid state, but when the rigor mort is sets in, it curdles completely. Myosin is insoluble in water, but soluble in very dilute acids and alkalies, and in a dilute solution of sodium chloride. It is coagulated by heating with water, and by the addition of alcohol. my-ō'-sis, s . [Gr.myō=to close the eyes or lips.] Pathol.: Permanent contraction of the pupil, usually caused by iritis. When it exists to such an extent as to obliterate the pupil it is called Synizesis. my-o-sit-ic, a. & 8. [MYOSIS.] A. As adj .: Contracting the pupil of the eye. B.
