Old province of n. France; under the Franks a part of Neustria; given by Charles the Simple to Rollo, as fief of French crown, 912. William, 7th duke of N., who conquered England 1066, was deprived of N. by his son Robert. It was seized by Phillipe-August us 1204, and held by France till 1415, then reconquered by England, and held till 1450. England still holds the neighboring islands.
