GIBSON

John, the famous sculptor, was born in 1790, the son of a landscape gardener, and was apprenticed to a wood-carver at Liverpool. He was eventually a isted to go to Rome, and studied under Canova, and afterwards under Thorwaldsen. He was made R. A. in 1836, but continued to live in Rome. Nearly all his subjects were taken from cla ical mythology, and he had a curious habit of colouring his statues.
