Androgyne

[See ANDROGYNOUS. An hermaph rodite. Androgynous, a . [Gr. androgynos , hermaphrodite; from aner , a man, and gyne , a woman.] ( Bot , and Zool .) A term sometimes employed in bot. to designate an inflorescence which consists of distinct male and female flowers; and more frequently in zoölogy in reference to animals which po e a distinct male and female generative system in the same individual. This is the case with very many of the lower kinds of animals, but is not inconsistent with a nece ity for the co-operation of two individuals in the propagation of the species. See Reproduction.
