FORBES-ROBERTSON

Sir Johnston, British actor, born in London in 1853. Educated at the Charter house, he studied art at the Royal Academy School, and elocution under Samuel Phelps, making his first appearance on the stage in 1874. He soon became one of the foremost actors of his time. Among the plays wherein he obtained great succe were; For the Crown (1896), JAfice and Men (1902), The Light that Failed (1903), and The Pa ing of the Third Floor Back. Among his Shakespeare an roles are Hamlet, Othello, Shylock, and Macbeth. He married Gertrude Elliot, the actre , in 1900, and was knighted in 1913 at the termination of his farewell season at Drury Lane. He wrote A Player under Three Reigns (1925).
